ComScore recently released its 2010 online video rankings, and it’s very little surprise who dominates the top spot for video sharing sites: Google. Consisting of not only YouTube, but Google Video as well, they account for a staggering 39.4% of the video sharing market. A distant second would be Hulu, accounting for a paltry (in comparison) 2.8% of the take. Lining up directly behind them are Microsoft (1.5%) and Yahoo Video(1.3%).
So does this really relate anything we didn’t already know? Perhaps not. Google (in particular YouTube) is the category killer here. What may not be so clear is where you can go to post your own videos, whether for enjoyment or for your business, so that they will be seen and perhaps generate some business.
The good news here is that there are a number of places you can distribute your videos that not only are very easy to work with, but provide a number of benefits. Here are a few of the top-rated video sharing sites:
• YouTube
• Yahoo Video
• Revver
• Metacafe
• DailyMotion
• Google Video
At all of these sites, it is free to open an account, and they have varying specifications. All of them have the ability to tag your videos, include links and descriptions, and make video comments. They have email capabilities, as well as RSS feeds of your particular videos, which is a useful way to get them indexed. All of them, for the most part, have the same sort of content guidelines: no hate, pornographic material, violence, and so on. All have great search functions, enabling others to find your videos easily by titles or tags.
Marketing using online video has never been hotter, and the search engines, Google in particular, is head over heels in love with it. (They did buy, YouTube, right?) Videos posted on some of these sites that are optimized correctly can appear in the organic search results within minutes. Also, with a little savvy marketing, such as changing titles and descriptions, the same video can be re-purposed and used on more than a few video sharing sites, and you can find yourself with several search engine listings for the same video!
Submitting your videos to these sites is not hard, but can be time-consuming. It is a task easily outsourced or delegated to staff. There are software solutions out there to help with this, especially if you’re a one-man (or woman) band, the most popular of these being Traffic Geyser.
Once your videos are live on these sites, don’t neglect to promote them, either by social bookmarking, linking to them or both. You should also always promote your promoters.
Online video accounted for more than 32.4 billion views in January 2010 alone. Don’t you think it’s a good idea to reach for a slice of that pie? Creating and sharing your online videos will help you to do just that, and is a great deal easier and faster than you might think!
